Here are my illustrations for this year's spn_j2_bigbang! This was my first ever big bang, so having the first post date (and having about half the time I wanted to work on this thanks to finals, AP testing, etc.) meant that I didn't get to do nearly as many illustrations as I would have liked.

Anyway, I hope you like these and I especially hope you go read the fic that inspired them, behindblue_eyes's incredible The Tales of Brave Ulysses.

I also want to say thanks to a couple of people: behindblue_eyes, obviously, for writing such a great story and for helping me fumble my way through my first big bang; sapphrein, for being the only person in real life I could complain (profusely and often) to about having an early deadline and for only laughing at me a reasonable amount for my ignorance about the ways of paint tool SAI; and of course to thehighwaywoman and wendy for their work putting this whole thing on.

so livejournal,

hello. i know we've met before in my numerous escapades through your fic, but i suppose this is our first real, woman-to-blogging-format confrontation. I'll be honest, I'm not sure I'll be posting more fic on here than I currently do on my AO3 account, but you know. It's nice to have another guilt motivator.

anyway the real reason why I'm posting this is because today was my mom's birthday and I volunteered to make the cupcakes for the occasion. They were dang good and I'd like to share with you the secrets of their chocolate spice-y wonder.

Cakes:
1 1/4 cup sugar (I like using castor sugar, but granulated would probably work just as well)
1 stick of butter
2 eggs
3/4 cup flour (sift it! it seems stupid but hand to galactus it really makes a difference)
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1/2 cup milk
1/4 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp vanilla
dashes of all of the following spices/only of some of them/whatever suits your fancy:
allspice
nutmeg
cloves
cinnamon
ginger
cardamom

combine them in typical cupcake fashion: cream sugar+butter, add egg, add half of the dry ingredients, then wet, then the rest of the dry. stick them in the oven at 375 degrees Fahrenheit and let them cook! they took 16 minutes in my oven and, when they were done, had sunken centers and were just starting to firm up around the edges. I normally have a problem with really dense cakes, but these were so airy that when i checked on them at 12 minutes, their little domes collapsed at the lightest touch. they were so moist and airy and overall 10/10 would recommend. i'm actually patting myself on the back for once.

also, the following is the recipe for the frosting i threw together because oh my god who knew homemade buttercream could actually taste like rich chocolate and not butter and sugar:

Frosting:

1 stick of butter
2 squares trader joe's pound plus dark chocolate ( i think it's the 60% variety? i just used what we have lying around, but my mantra is usually the darker, the better)
1 cup powdered sugar
1 or 2 big spoonfuls of cocoa powder
vanilla extract

when the butter is at room tempurature, cut it into small squares, stick it in the mixer and cream it well. after doing this (or, retrospectively, before whilst waiting for the butter to warm up), use a big knife to cut the squares of chocolate into small shaved pieces. Put these pieces into a bowl and microwave it for 15 second increments, stirring between intervals, until the chocolate is totally melted. pour the chocolate in with the butter and mix until combined, making sure to fold the mixture in as you go. add the sugar, cocoa powder and vanilla extract and mix. Once everything is combined, I like to turn the speed on the mixer to the max for a little while- it adds air to the frosting and keeps it from being too much like fudge (which is basically what this frosting is. you're welcome.)

hugs kisses and a speedy recovery to our beloved tumblr dash,
novakiel
